Instead of fixing the problems many Samsung Galaxy S8 owners reported, many more actually encountered issues after updating their devices to Android 8.0 Oreo. many of our readers have been contacting us regarding some problems we ourselves haven’t encountered yet. While we’ve addressed some of those concerns, there are also problems that keep on repeating and one of them is when the screen turns black leaving the impression that the phone is powered down but there’s a blue light that keeps blinking.
In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Galaxy S8 with this kind of problem. Since it’s not the first time we encountered it, we already know a thing or two that could fix it and I will share it with you. So, if you’re one of the owners of this phone who recently updated it but then got the black screen with blue light blinking, continue reading as this article may be able to help you one way or another.

How to fix Galaxy S8 with black screen and blue light blinking
If you’re familiar with the issue we often refer to as “black screen of death,” then this problem is similar to that only that the blue blinking light is an indicator that the phone is actually powered on. In fact, all of its components, services and apps may still be working properly except the display. If you currently has this problem with your phone, try calling your number and you may hear it ring or you may try sending a text and the notification sound may play.
Now, here’s what you have to do about this problem…
Solution to Galaxy S8 black screen with blue light blinking issue
Based on my personal experience, I can say that this problem is just due to a firmware crash and whether or not the Android 8.0 Oreo update caused it, you can fix it on your own without bringing the phone to the shop and this is how you do it:
- Press and hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time for 10 seconds or more.
If your Galaxy S8 reboots normally after this, then that would be the end of the problem but I cannot guarantee it won’t happen again in the future. At least, now you know what to do should the screen turn black again.
On the other hand, if the phone doesn’t respond after doing the aforementioned procedure, they try this.
- Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t release it yet.
- Now, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
- Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.
This is basically just the same as the first procedure only that we’re making sure that you press and hold the volume down button before the power key because doing it otherwise won’t give you the same result.

Should the problem keep on happening in the future, you should reset it as the problem may be due to some corrupt data files but don’t forget to create a backup of your important files and data before the reset.
- Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
If by any chance the problem started after the phone got dropped on a hard surface or got submerged in water for a long time, then it might be due to some physical and/or liquid damage. There’s only so much you can do if this is the case so you should bring the device to the shop so that a technician can fix it for you.
